In an inspiring event, over 100 elementary school students in Portland were escorted home by musical sensation Benson Boone. Known for his hits like “Beautiful Things” and “Mystical Magical,” Boone took a break from performing to join a local bike bus, surprising the children with his presence and infectious energy.
Sam Balto, a physical education teacher and co-founder of Bike Bus World, shared how Boone’s interactions with the kids left him moved. “He was asking kids’ names, taking selfies with them, and engaging in conversations all while riding his bike,” Balto recounted. Boone’s genuine attitude shone through as he sang along with the children, creating a cheerful atmosphere during their ride home.
Bike buses, which involve groups of children riding together to school under the supervision of adult volunteers, aim to promote safe transportation and foster community connections. Balto co-founded Bike Bus World to encourage and support the growth of these initiatives, which have now spread to 30 states and over 400 locations worldwide. “The bike bus is not just transportation; it’s a way of life,” Balto noted, emphasizing the joyful environment fostered by music and fun activities like bubbles.
The excitement for Boone’s involvement began with a video request two weeks prior to the ride, which garnered thousands of likes and tags on social media. Although initially, it seemed he wouldn’t be able to join the ride, the surprise came shortly before school ended when Boone’s team confirmed he would indeed participate. The children were ecstatic to see him, with Balto playing Boone’s music as they cycled together.
Following the ride, Boone took time to pose for group photos and sign autographs, much to the delight of the students. Balto expressed gratitude for celebrities like Boone who raise awareness about the bike bus movement, highlighting the increasing need for community support in parenting and childhood independence.
“Parenting can be challenging, and the bike bus serves as a wonderful tool to mend the social fabric that can fray in our fast-paced lives,” he stated. His observations reflect a growing desire among parents for their children to engage more actively with their surroundings, countering the narrative that kids prefer screens over outdoor play.
Balto pointed out the positive reactions from drivers as they witness the bike bus in action, noting the community’s embrace of this initiative. Though typically operated on Wednesday mornings, the special Friday ride with Boone turned out to be a memorable occasion, rounding off the week on a high note. Describing Boone as “the kindest, most genuine person,” Balto expressed the profound impact such events have on both children and the community, fostering a spirit of togetherness and encouraging healthier lifestyles for the youth.
