A week after throwing a game-tying touchdown pass in the final moments against the Dallas Cowboys, Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett connected with receiver JJ Laap in the fourth quarter for a 47-yard touchdown that ultimately secured the victory.
After the previous game, where he struggled with four interceptions in a 13-12 win over the Cowboys, Bennett aimed to build on the positives and reduce his errors. He successfully completed 17 of 31 passes for 213 yards, along with one interception and a fumble.
“Overall the operation and the execution was better,” Bennett commented.
Bennett’s performance was enhanced by playing the entire game against Dallas and taking second-team practice reps during a joint session with the Cowboys last Wednesday.
Going up against a Chargers defense missing key players like Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, and Derwin James Jr., Bennett was mostly cautious with his decisions, though he did throw a pivotal interception. After the Rams recovered a fumble in the third quarter, he led the offense to the one-yard line, only to have defensive back Deane Leonard intercept his pass in the end zone.
However, Bennett quickly rebounded in the fourth quarter, connecting with Laap to give the Rams a 13-9 lead.
Bennett, who sat out last season due to a nonfootball injury, acknowledged he continues to learn from his missteps.
“When you don’t play football for so long, you want it to be perfect,” he explained. “But you kind of gotta make those mistakes to learn from it. As much as I don’t want to do that, it is good that some things like that happen.”
