Bengals Star at a Contract Crossroads: Will Hendrickson Sit Out?

Cincinnati Bengals star defensive end Trey Hendrickson is at a crossroads in his career as contract negotiations continue without resolution. According to ESPN, there are concerns that Hendrickson might consider sitting out the final year of his contract, potentially even missing games or the entire season if a long-term deal is not finalized.

Insider Jeremy Fowler reported that Hendrickson is “extremely dug in” regarding his position, highlighting the severity of the negotiations as they have stalled amidst trade discussions with several teams. The 30-year-old defensive powerhouse is currently seeking a deal that reflects his market value, which has been a focal point in talks this offseason.

Earlier, the Bengals granted Hendrickson’s trade request, although another request made in 2024 was denied. Prior to free agency and the NFL draft, Hendrickson tested the market, garnering interest from multiple teams, but no substantial offers have come to fruition, as noted by fellow ESPN reporter Ben Baby.

With a base salary of $15.8 million for 2025 and having skipped voluntary workouts this offseason, Hendrickson’s absence raises eyebrows. He missed critical OTA sessions at the end of May and faces potential fines for not participating in the upcoming mandatory minicamp scheduled for June 10-12.

The Bengals, who recently secured long-term deals for key players Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, currently have $27.6 million in cap space for the upcoming season. Hendrickson has made clear that he does not intend to play until his contract is resolved—an indication of his commitment to securing a more favorable agreement.

Last season, Hendrickson showcased his value by leading the league in sacks with 17.5, contributing to nearly half of Cincinnati’s total sacks, and earning a place on the Associated Press All-Pro team while making the Pro Bowl for the fourth consecutive year.

This situation reflects the complex and often challenging nature of contract negotiations in professional sports, where player performances and market values must be weighed carefully. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds, hoping for a resolution that keeps Hendrickson on the field where he thrives.
