Joe Burrow addressed the situation regarding Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who is skipping mandatory minicamp. When asked if this absence serves as a distraction, Burrow confidently responded, “Of course. Of course,” indicating that while it’s not ideal, it’s a part of the NFL landscape. The Bengals are currently experiencing fewer distractions compared to last year when both Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins were embroiled in contract negotiations.
Burrow highlighted the positive atmosphere created by his star receivers, both of whom have secured lucrative contracts this offseason—Chase with a four-year extension worth $161 million and Higgins for $115 million over four years. Their participation in practices, unlike last year’s troubled offseason, contributes to team morale and energy.
Chase had an impressive performance last season, achieving the NFL Triple Crown with 127 receptions, 1,708 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns. Higgins, while playing in only 12 games, was close to achieving 1,000 receiving yards again, with a career-high of 10 touchdowns.
On the defensive side, Hendrickson, who is looking for a long-term contract after stellar seasons, notably leading the league with 17.5 sacks in 2024, is yet to secure the deal he desires. Despite joining the Bengals with a successful history, including four consecutive Pro Bowl selections, contract negotiations have left uncertainty about his future.
Meanwhile, rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart, the Bengals’ No. 17 overall pick, is attending minicamp but has not yet finalized his rookie contract. Stewart expressed his frustration regarding his contract situation, stating he feels justified in his demands.
The Bengals are eager for a solid defensive season in 2025, particularly after experiencing challenges last season, where they allowed an average of 25.5 points per game. The complexities surrounding Hendrickson’s and Stewart’s contracts underscore ongoing challenges, but the team’s star players like Burrow, Chase, and Higgins inspire hope for a productive season ahead.
