The Cincinnati Bengals have experienced a tumultuous 2025 NFL season, marked by a sharp decline in performance following a promising start. After winning their first two games, the team lost franchise quarterback Joe Burrow due to a turf toe injury, and the Bengals have since struggled, dropping six out of their last seven games. This unfortunate turn of events has left the team with a disappointing record of 3-6.
In his AFC Midseason Report Card, Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame assigned the Bengals a troubling grade of “F” for their season. Verderame noted, “This has been a disastrous season for the Bengals.” Burrow, who has faced multiple season-ending injuries since being drafted in 2020, might not be fully ruled out for the year, but with their playoff chances fading, it seems wise for the Bengals to prioritize his rehabilitation for the 2026 season.
While the acquisition of quarterback Joe Flacco has been viewed as a positive development, the team’s defensive struggles have overshadowed any offensive progress. The Bengals’ defense has ranked among the worst in the league, situated at 25th in points and yards allowed. This inadequacy forced the franchise to make a coaching change, firing defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who had previously found success with the Colts. His successor, Al Golden, has faced significant challenges, with recent games against the Jets and Bears resulting in over 500 total yards surrendered each time. The Bengals now stand last in the league, allowing an alarming average of 426.6 yards and 33.3 points per game.
With a record reflecting their struggles and the ongoing troubles on the defensive end, the low grade from Verderame appears justified. Unless a drastic turnaround occurs, it seems likely that the Bengals will continue to face difficulties as the season progresses. However, the potential return of Joe Burrow in the future could provide a glimmer of hope as the team looks to rebuild and refocus for next year.
