The Cincinnati Bengals have officially signed former University of Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The 25-year-old quarterback has now joined his fourth team in the NFL following a third-round selection by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2022 NFL Draft. After spending two seasons as the Falcons’ starting quarterback, Ridder was released and subsequently signed on as a backup with the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders.
During his collegiate career at UC, Ridder was notable for leading the Bearcats to the college football playoff semi-finals against Alabama in 2021. He became the team’s starting quarterback in the 2018 season, showcasing his talent and contributing significantly to the program.
Now with the Bengals, Ridder enters a quarterback room headed by star Joe Burrow, alongside Jake Browning, Logan Woodside, and Payton Thorne. This signing occurs just days before training camp begins, indicating the Bengals’ intention to add depth and foster competition for the No. 3 quarterback position.
Head Coach Zac Taylor has a personal connection to Ridder, having held the role of offensive coordinator at the University of Cincinnati in 2016 and playing a part in bringing Ridder to the school.
This can be seen as a strategic move by the Bengals to enhance their quarterback lineup and ensure options and readiness as the season approaches. Ridder’s history and experience could bring valuable competitive energy to the team, benefiting both his performance and that of his teammates.
