CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Joe Burrow understood the significance of the game as the Cincinnati Bengals aimed for their first victory of the season against the Carolina Panthers. He delivered a standout performance, leading the team to a 34-24 win on Sunday.
Burrow completed 232 passing yards with two touchdowns. Chase Brown contributed significantly with 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns. This victory was crucial, allowing the Bengals to avoid the daunting prospect of starting the season 0-4, a position that historically hampers playoff aspirations.
“We knew we had to come and get one,” Burrow stated. “There was really no other option than to figure out how to win this game. And we got it done.”
Burrow’s performance was bolstered by star receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who caught three passes for 85 yards, including a spectacular 63-yard touchdown after breaking multiple tackles and showcasing impressive speed.
Coach Zac Taylor praised Chase’s ability, noting, “That speaks to who Ja’Marr is.”
Other contributors included Zack Moss, who had 78 scrimmage yards and a touchdown reception, and Tee Higgins, who caught six passes for 60 yards while drawing important defensive penalties.
Andy Dalton, playing against his former team, threw for 220 yards, registering two touchdowns along with one interception. Although he couldn’t replicate his previous week’s success against the Las Vegas Raiders, Dalton remained optimistic about the team’s progress.
Chuba Hubbard was another standout performer for the Panthers, rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown, while Diontae Johnson caught seven passes for 83 yards and a score.
“We’ve got to finish,” said Panthers head coach Dave Canales, emphasizing the need for improvement as his team continues its rebuild.
The Bengals’ defense also stepped up, forcing a turnover early on and effectively containing the Panthers’ offensive efforts, particularly after an impressive interception by Vonn Bell.
Cincinnati regained ground in the second half, rushing for 130 yards and securing the win with a field goal late in the game.
In the absence of Adam Thielen, rookie Xavier Legette seized the opportunity, catching six passes for 66 yards and scoring his first NFL touchdown.
The game also featured a halftime tribute to defensive end Julius Peppers, who received recognition for his recent induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Injury updates noted that Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson sustained a neck stinger, while the Panthers’ Shaq Thompson and Josey Jewell left the game with injuries.
Looking ahead, the Bengals are set to host the Ravens next Sunday, while the Panthers will visit the Bears.
