Fijian rugby international Ben Volavola is poised for a significant return to Super Rugby, having signed a one-year contract with the Queensland Reds for the 2026 season. The Queensland Rugby Union has officially announced this signing, emphasizing Volavola’s extensive experience and versatility, noting that he can effectively play multiple positions, including fly-half, inside centre, and fullback.
At 34 years old, Volavola has had a distinguished career in rugby, having racked up over 200 professional matches and 38 Test caps for Fiji, during which he participated in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. His experience is further underscored by his recent stint with the Leicester Tigers in England, where he notably worked with former Waratahs coach Michael Cheika, an experience he credits with rejuvenating his passion for the sport.
In discussing his move to the Reds, Volavola expressed his eagerness to join a squad he believes is capable of competing for silverware. “The biggest reason I found the Reds so appealing is believing that they have a squad that can challenge for some silverware,” he remarked. The prospect of returning to Australia and being closer to family, particularly with a two-year-old son, has also influenced his decision.
Volavola’s journey began in Sydney, where he made his professional debut with the NSW Waratahs in 2013, followed by successful stints at clubs such as the Crusaders and Melbourne Rebels. After his time in Australia, he spent seven seasons in Europe, playing for various clubs in France and England.
Looking ahead, Volavola aims not only to contribute to the Reds but also to keep his international career alive. His Australian eligibility is set to be reactivated in 2026, allowing him to potentially represent either Fiji or Australia in future international competitions. “To play international rugby again and get myself to a Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027 is definitely an ambition,” he stated, showcasing his determination to realize this goal.
