Ben Folds’ Bold Move: New Live Album Sparks Arts Community Rally

This Fourth of July, musician Ben Folds unveiled a new live album titled “Ben Folds Live with the National Symphony Orchestra.” The recording captures a performance at the sold-out Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The concert occurred prior to Folds’ resignation as the Artistic Advisor of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), a position he left in protest against what he described as a betrayal of the institution’s mission following Trump’s controversial reorganization.

The album features a blend of beloved Ben Folds classics along with fresh material, all brought to life with the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Steven Reineke. Guest performers include Regina Spektor and Tall Heights, complemented by a choir consisting of Doug Peck, Nicholas Kassoy, and Marc Silvey. This collaboration highlights a moment of artistic achievement and unity, especially in light of the recent challenges faced by the cultural institution.

Fans can enjoy the album through various streaming platforms, and physical copies are also available, including signed CDs and vinyl editions. To further engage with his audience, Folds will participate in a live discussion on TalkShopLive on July 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET. Additionally, he is scheduled to tour solo and with orchestras across the U.S., reflecting his ongoing commitment to live music and performance.

Folds’ defiance in leaving the NSO spotlights a broader sentiment shared by many artists who have expressed their concerns over the changing landscape of the Kennedy Center since Trump’s administration took charge. Artists like Lin Manuel Miranda and Issa Rae have also voiced their objection to recent developments, reinforcing the importance of maintaining cultural integrity in the face of political pressures.

This release represents not only a celebration of music but also an act of solidarity in the arts community, promoting hope and resilience as artists navigate through difficult times.
