Tony Slattery, the beloved comedian and actor, has passed away at the age of 65 due to a heart attack, his partner Mark Michael Hutchinson announced. Slattery was widely recognized for his improvisational brilliance on the acclaimed comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, along with his contributions to Just a Minute and Have I Got News for You.
In a heartfelt statement, Hutchinson expressed the profound sadness surrounding Slattery’s death, which occurred on Tuesday morning, following a heart attack on Sunday evening. Sandi Toksvig, a fellow comedian, paid tribute to Slattery, recalling him as “astonishing” and praising his stunning looks, joyous smile, infectious laugh, and remarkable kindness.
Clive Anderson, who hosted Whose Line Is It Anyway?, remembered Slattery for his quick wit and outrageous humor, describing him as “the naughtiest kid in the class.” Slattery was born in north London in 1959 and earned a scholarship to study languages at Cambridge University, where he quickly emerged as a star. As president of the Cambridge Footlights, he followed in the footsteps of other greats like Eric Idle and Stephen Fry.
In addition to his live performances, Slattery was an accomplished actor in film and theatre. He appeared in notable films such as The Crying Game and Peter’s Friends, while also earning recognition on the stage, including a nomination for an Olivier Award for best comedy performance in Neville’s Island.
