Beloved “Beverly Hills Cop” Star John Ashton Passes Away at 76

John Ashton, the actor renowned for portraying the rule-abiding detective in the “Beverly Hills Cop” series, has passed away at the age of 76. His publicist, Alan Somers, confirmed the news to CBS News on Sunday. Ashton died on Thursday in Ft. Collins, Colorado, following a battle with cancer.

A statement from Somers noted, “John was a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

Ashton, born on February 22, 1948, in Springfield, Massachusetts, grew up in Enfield, Connecticut, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California.

Over a career that spanned five decades, Ashton featured in nearly 100 films, beginning with his debut in the 1973 movie “The Psychopath.” He is most recognized for his role as Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the initial two “Beverly Hills Cop” films, starring alongside Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. He also reprised his character in the upcoming “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” set for release in 2024.

Ashton’s other notable film roles include appearances in “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “She’s Having a Baby,” “Midnight Run,” “Little Big League,” and “Gone Baby Gone.” On television, he was known for his role as Willie Joe Garr in multiple episodes of “Dallas,” and he made guest appearances on shows like “Columbo,” “Police Squad!,” and “Hardball.”

Somers remarked on Ashton’s dedication, stating, “John devoted his career to honing his craft and bringing characters to life on the screen. His presence will be greatly missed.”

He is survived by his wife Robin Hoye, three children, three step-children, and a grandson, along with two sisters and a brother. The family emphasized Ashton’s legacy of love and dedication, highlighting that his memory would be cherished by his loved ones and the impact he made during his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Ashton’s memory be made to Pathways Hospice Care.
