Lynne Marie Stewart, the beloved actress renowned for her roles in “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” has passed away at the age of 78. Her death was announced on Friday by a representative of The Groundlings, a comedy troupe where she was a significant figure.
The cause of her death has not yet been disclosed. The Groundlings expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of our dear sweet Lynne Stewart. She wasn’t just the most beautiful woman in all of Puppetland — she was the most beautiful woman that we ever met, inside and out.”
Born on December 14, 1946, in Los Angeles, Stewart began her career in the 1970s and 1980s as a member of The Groundlings, influencing the comedic landscape. Stewart gained fame for her portrayal of Miss Yvonne, dubbed “the most beautiful woman in Puppetland,” initially in The Pee-Wee Herman Show and later in the hit CBS series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” which ran from 1986 to 1991. She also reprised this iconic character in a 2010 stage revival and on Broadway.
In addition to her role as Miss Yvonne, Stewart had a recurring role as Bonnie Kelly, Charlie Day’s mother, on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” with her final appearance in the show’s 16th season in 2023. Her versatile career included appearances in classic titles such as “American Graffiti,” “M*A*S*H,” and “Arrested Development,” showcasing her exceptional talent across various genres.
Stewart is survived by her sister, Gayle Stewart. Fellow actress and friend Cassandra Peterson, known for her role as Elvira, shared heartfelt memories of Stewart, calling her “one of the kindest, sweetest, funniest women who ever lived.”
