Belize is in mourning after the passing of two influential figures, Michael J. Heusner and Dr. Francis Gary Longsworth, who made significant contributions to the nation’s tourism and healthcare industries, respectively.

Michael J. Heusner, affectionately known as Mike, was a prominent figure in Belize’s eco-tourism and sport fishing landscape. As the longtime steward of Belize River Lodge, Heusner played a pivotal role in establishing Belize as a premier destination for angling enthusiasts and wildlife aficionados. His commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism was evident through his leadership roles in the Belize Audubon Society and various tourism associations. In 2018, he was recognized as an Oceana Ocean Hero, a testament to his efforts in protecting the marine environment. The Minister of Tourism, Anthony Mahler, along with the Belize Tourism Board, has expressed heartfelt condolences to Heusner’s family and friends, acknowledging his enduring legacy that has inspired future generations in the industry.

On the healthcare front, the medical community is reflecting on the life of Dr. Francis Gary Longsworth, the former CEO of Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Dr. Longsworth passed away after a brief illness over the weekend, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and compassion. His journey began as a lecturer in biology before he pursued a medical career at the University of the West Indies. Upon returning to Belize, he led KHMH through critical enhancements, including the establishment of a Neonatal-Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Colleagues remember him as calm, approachable, and tirelessly devoted to improving healthcare services. He was also actively involved with the HelpAge Belize board. Dr. Longsworth is survived by his former wife, Luz, and two adult children, whose lives he touched will carry on his commitment to healthcare in Belize.

The contributions of both Heusner and Longsworth have left an indelible mark on Belize, inspiring new generations in tourism and healthcare. Their legacies will not only be remembered fondly but will continue to influence the future of their respective fields.
