Belize mourns the loss of a distinguished medical expert and dedicated public servant, Dr. Francis Gary Longsworth, who passed away over the weekend. With a career that spanned decades, Dr. Longsworth was instrumental in enhancing the health sector in Belize through a variety of roles in both clinical and administrative capacities.

A former biology lecturer at Belize Technical College Sixth Form, Dr. Longsworth pursued medical training at the University of the West Indies before returning to Belize to serve in the public health system. He held various positions, including Chief Executive Officer at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMHA), where he was pivotal in institutional planning and development. One of his significant contributions was laying the foundation for the creation of the hospital’s combined Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units, showcasing his commitment to improving healthcare services for the vulnerable population.

In addition to his hospital work, Dr. Longsworth remained an active participant in national health initiatives, serving on the board of HelpAge Belize. Colleagues and friends remember him for his unwavering dedication to public service, blending technical expertise with a warm and approachable leadership style.

Dr. Longsworth is survived by his former wife Luz and their two adult children. His legacy as a committed professional will be felt for years to come, as his efforts have significantly shaped the landscape of modern healthcare delivery in Belize.
