Alongside Belichick, veteran NFL executive Michael Lombardi will join him as the general manager for UNC football. Lombardi is well-acquainted with Belichick, having worked together during their time with the Cleveland Browns in the 90s, and having served under Belichick as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots in later years. Although UNC has not officially announced Lombardi’s hiring, his association with Belichick adds to the credibility and experience of the new leadership.
Belichick, who was previously with the New England Patriots for over two decades, steps into this role following the dismissal of Mack Brown, who led the team for six seasons. The Tar Heels finished their latest season with a record of 6-6. As the Fenway Bowl approaches, Freddie Kitchens, the run game coordinator and tight ends coach, will temporarily lead the team.
Despite his legendary NFL status, Belichick enters this new chapter without prior college coaching experience, although he has deep roots in the college game. His father, who coached at Navy, also served as an assistant at UNC during the 1950s.
