CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina’s defensive backs are currently adapting to their new coaching dynamics under the Belichick family. Head coach Bill Belichick oversees the program, supported by his sons—defensive coordinator Steve Belichick and Brian Belichick, responsible for the Tar Heels’ defensive backs and safeties.
Cornerback Marcus Allen noted the distinct coaching styles within the Belichick framework, highlighting Steve’s invaluable NFL experience and defensive knowledge, as well as Brian’s keen understanding of the overall defensive strategy. “Having them two together is really allowing us to be a better defense,” Allen remarked, emphasizing how their combined expertise helps the players make smarter calls and generate more plays on the field.
Steve’s transition from Washington, along with players like cornerback Thad Dixon and linebacker Khmori House, has already made an impact at UNC. House shared that his previous relationship with Steve, developed through time spent in the coordinator’s office, has continued to flourish in this new environment. By learning the schemes more deeply, House feels they’ve built a solid rapport.
Both Allen and House credited Steve’s adaptive play-calling style, tailored to the players’ strengths and allowing for greater freedom on the field. “He’s just really good at knowing his players,” House pointed out, expressing confidence in Steve’s ability to leverage the team’s skills effectively. This autonomy has eased the transition for veteran players like Allen, who have experienced multiple defensive coordinators in recent seasons.
Despite the challenges of adjusting to a new coaching philosophy, the players express optimism about the upcoming season which kicks off on September 1 against TCU. Coach Bill Belichick acknowledged the challenge of implementing new strategies without traditional preseason scrimmages to gauge performance, leaving some uncertainties about how players will react under game pressure.
As the Tar Heels gear up for the new season, the combination of the Belichicks’ coaching knowledge and the players’ adaptability could pave the way for a promising campaign ahead. With a focus on collaboration and skill-based strategies, North Carolina aims to elevate its defensive game during the 2025 season.
