Belgium’s World Cup Squad: A New Star Shines Amid Veteran Core

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia unveiled his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign on Tuesday, introducing notable new addition Diego Moreira from Strasbourg. Moreira, who developed his skills in Portugal’s youth system, has switched his international allegiance back to Belgium despite his previous experience with Portuguese youth teams.

The team will rely on seasoned players such as Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne, and Romelu Lukaku as they prepare to kick off their qualifying journey. The Red Devils are set to face North Macedonia on June 6, followed by a match against Wales on June 9.

Garcia expressed enthusiasm about Moreira, describing him as a “versatile player.” He noted, “Diego is a player with dual nationality, but he has now chosen Belgium.” Moreira has had an impressive season as a left-back but possesses the ability to contribute in offensive roles as well.

Interestingly, Roméo Lavia did not make the squad, a decision Garcia explained by stating Lavia’s recent form has not met the performance standards required for selection. Garcia emphasized, “We do not select on potential, but on performance.”

This selection hints at a strategy focused on immediate performance while also recognizing potential talent like Moreira, indicating a dynamic approach to the upcoming qualifiers. The arrival of fresh talent could invigorate the team as they aim for success on the world stage.
