Belarus Champions Climate Action and Health Collaboration at BRICS Summit

MINSK, July 8 – During the 17th BRICS Summit Session on “Environment, COP 30 and Global Health” held in Rio de Janeiro, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maksim Ryzhenkov, expressed the country’s readiness to collaborate with BRICS nations in establishing coordinated strategies to tackle environmental and biological threats.

Ryzhenkov highlighted Belarus’ commitment to sharing its expertise and cutting-edge technologies related to crucial issues on the climate agenda and public health that have global significance. He emphasized that addressing climate change and fostering a healthy environment is a cornerstone of Belarus’ national security strategy.

Sustainable Development Goal 13, which focuses on “Climate Action,” has been incorporated into the strategic frameworks of Belarus. The country has already developed two national programs dedicated to mitigating climate impacts and has laid out plans for adapting its agricultural practices and water resource management. The commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has contributed to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, with the country aiming for an annual decrease of over 8 million tonnes. To further this momentum, Belarus is formulating a Long-Term Strategy for Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions, targeting the year 2050.

Additionally, Ryzhenkov noted a significant rise in the utilization of renewable energy sources and the rapid advancement of electric transport, driven by expanding infrastructure. As a leader in wetland restoration, Belarus also plays a vital role in enhancing ecosystem services across Europe.

The minister made a poignant connection between the environment and human health, stating that in the face of global challenges such as pandemics, an integrated approach is essential for sustainable development. Belarus is improving its healthcare system through initiatives like the Centralized Health Information System, which aims to enhance digital integration in healthcare management.

Ryzhenkov concluded by expressing confidence in the BRICS platform as a promising venue for fostering international cooperation on these urgent issues.

This proactive stance by Belarus highlights the growing recognition of the interconnectedness of environmental sustainability and public health, fostering hope that collaborative efforts through platforms like BRICS can lead to meaningful advancements in global health and environmental protection.
