Visual effects supervisor Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser shares insights into the collaborative efforts that brought the iconic horror of Aliens back to theaters in Alien: Romulus.
Recalling his experience from the summer of 1979, Sepulveda-Fauser, then just 12 years old, sneaked into a screening of the original Alien at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. The film left a lasting impression on him, marking a pivotal moment in his childhood. Fast forward to 2024, and Sepulveda-Fauser now leads the visual effects team at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for the latest installment in the franchise, Alien: Romulus, which hit theaters on August 16.
Set between the events of the original Alien and its sequel Aliens, Romulus follows a group of Weyland-Yutani colony workers, including siblings Rain and Andy, who confront terrifying alien threats aboard an abandoned spacecraft. Director Fede Álvarez’s vision for the film aimed to echo the chilling atmosphere of the original, which deeply resonated with Sepulveda-Fauser.
