Behind the Scenes at Barclays: Future Journalists Inspired

Allison D’Antonio’s sports journalism class from Jericho High School recently had an inspiring experience at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, one of the most prominent sports and entertainment venues in the USA. The visit provided students with insight into the sports industry and a chance to learn from professionals in the field.

The students were warmly welcomed by Jaime Stephenson, the operations administration manager, and Benjamin Katz, senior manager for international marketing and innovation at BSE Global. They guided the class on an informative tour, sharing their personal career journeys, fascinating anecdotes about the arena, and the operational side of live events.

Opened in 2012, the Barclays Center is home to the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, and also hosted the New York Islanders in the past. The journalism students experienced standing on the arena floor where numerous legends have left their mark. Sophomore Austin W. expressed his excitement, saying it was thrilling to stand where his favorite athletes and artists have performed.

Part of the tour included exclusive access to the Crown Club, known for its exquisite dining services from the popular Carbone restaurant. Freshman Charley S. shared her enthusiasm about the venue’s unique culinary experience, hoping to enjoy a meal there during a future game.

Students also explored the press areas and cafeteria where journalists gather during events, providing them with a firsthand look at the ambiance of sports journalism. A behind-the-scenes glimpse into the technical production side of live events captivated the students. Sophomore Matt W. noted how enlightening it was to understand the important work that goes into the audio and visual experiences at the arena.

An exciting moment occurred when some students spotted Brooklyn Nets player Cam Thomas outside the venue. Junior Melanie J. reflected on the thrill of being so close to a professional athlete and the lingering impact of that encounter.

Overall, the trip was a significant learning experience for the sports journalism class. It offered them a deep dive into the operations of a major sports venue, leaving them inspired about their future possibilities in the world of sports. Such opportunities help pave the way for young aspiring journalists to envision their future careers in the industry.
