Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga recently praised the Fiji Police Force, referring to them as “unsung heroes” who carry the weight of national security. During a parliamentary debate on the police force’s 2020-2021 annual report, Turaga highlighted not only the officers’ dedication but also the sacrifices made by their families, who often endure missed occasions and sleepless nights while supporting their loved ones in such a demanding role.
Mr. Turaga acknowledged the hard work of police officers, noting some work up to 20 hours in a single shift, often prioritizing service over personal well-being. He stressed that the officers’ families play a crucial role in the police force’s effectiveness, stating, “When the family of an officer is supported and cared for, the officer is stronger, the force is stronger, and ultimately our nation is stronger.”
He also commended Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu for his leadership and thanked international partners for their support in training and equipping the police force. Turaga highlighted recent successful drug busts as evidence of the professionalism and bravery exhibited by the officers, adding, “The recent actions send a strong and clear message — no one is above the law.”
Addressing the broader issues impacting crime, Turaga called attention to the review of the 1965 Police Act as a positive step toward reforms. However, he emphasized that effective policing alone cannot resolve the nation’s drug and crime challenges. He pointed to root causes such as poverty and unemployment, urging for collective efforts between police, communities, and faith-based groups to tackle these underlying issues.
The sentiments expressed by Turaga resonate with recent comments from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who earlier recognized the sacrifices made by police officers and their families during a Christmas service. Rabuka highlighted the importance of law enforcement in maintaining national safety and encouraged a renewed commitment to core values like sacrifice and unity.
In the face of some officers’ misconduct, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has reiterated the importance of integrity within the police force, while also acknowledging that the majority of officers are dedicated and honorable. This ongoing dialogue within the government reflects a commitment to restoring public trust in law enforcement. As Fiji navigates these challenges, the emphasis on community partnership and mutual support presents an optimistic path forward, fostering a safer and more unified environment for all citizens.
