Bears Safety Stretchered Off in Preseason Finale: What We Know

Chicago Bears safety Douglas Coleman III was stretchered off the field during the team’s final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night. The injury occurred early in the third quarter when Coleman attempted to tackle wide receiver Cornell Powell. After falling to the ground, he remained motionless, prompting players from both teams to kneel and medical staff to rush to his aid.

Coleman was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher and placed onto a medical cart, with Bears players and coaches gathering to express their support. Fans at Arrowhead Stadium applauded as he was wheeled away.

The Bears secured a 34-21 victory against the Chiefs, wrapping up the preseason with a perfect 4-0 record. Following the game, head coach Matt Eberflus informed the media that Coleman had movement in his limbs and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Eberflus noted that while he was on the field, Coleman was able to move and gave a thumbs up, which provided some reassurance to the team.

The 26-year-old safety, who went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft after playing at Texas Tech University, spent the last two seasons in the Canadian Football League before signing a futures contract with the Bears this offseason. The team has been approached for more updates on his condition.
