Bears Make History with Rookie Signing as NFL Contract Trends Shift

The Chicago Bears have officially signed second-round wide receiver Luther Burden III to a four-year rookie contract valued at $10.965 million, making history as the first 39th overall pick to secure a fully guaranteed deal. This significant milestone reflects a changing trend in how second-round selections are being compensated, aiming for contracts akin to those of first-round picks.

Prior to Burden’s signing, the Bears had also secured agreements with second-round offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo and defensive tackle Shemar Turner, who received mostly guaranteed contracts. This shift is notable as many second-round picks were negotiating for greater guarantees, seen recently with players like Jayden Higgins of the Houston Texans and Carson Schwesinger of the Cleveland Browns landing fully guaranteed deals themselves.

Burden is anticipated to play a crucial part in the offense designed by new head coach Ben Johnson. Although he has missed recent practices due to a soft tissue injury sustained during rookie minicamp, the expectation is that he will be fully prepared for the start of training camp. His ability to build chemistry with quarterback Caleb Williams will be vital as the team heads into the upcoming season.

With Burden now under contract, the Bears have successfully signed all eight of their rookie draft picks ahead of training camp, which sees rookies reporting this Saturday, followed by veterans three days later on Tuesday.

The Bears’ proactive approach in securing their draft class demonstrates a commitment to fostering a competitive team environment as they prepare for the season, further enhancing their chances for a successful campaign.
