Bears Eye Bold Moves to Boost Pass Rush After Odeyingbo Season-Ending Injury

The Chicago Bears’ defense has encountered another setback with the news that defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo has torn his Achilles, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. Head Coach Ben Johnson confirmed the injury on Monday afternoon.

Odeyingbo, a high-profile free agent acquisition this spring, had signed a three-year, $48 million contract in March. At just 26 years old, he was viewed by the Bears’ front office and coaching staff as a key player with significant potential, intended to strengthen the defensive lineup alongside Montez Sweat in Dennis Allen’s defensive scheme.

While Odeyingbo has struggled to produce sacks this season, with only one sack and four quarterback hits, Johnson noted the value of his interior rush during passing situations. His performance had contributed to the Bears maintaining one of the top third-down defenses in the league. In fact, Johnson mentioned that Odeyingbo displayed his best performance against the run in last week’s match against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Bears have faced ongoing challenges, including placing rookie defensive lineman Shemar Turner on injured reserve due to a torn ACL, squashing hopes for his emerging impact as a reserve defensive end. Additionally, Dominique Robinson, the team’s No. 3 edge rusher, missed the recent game in Cincinnati due to an ankle injury but remains off injured reserve, suggesting a possible return in the near future. Second-year defensive end Austin Booker made an impressive season debut, achieving a strip-sack during his time on the field.

Replacing Odeyingbo’s spot will likely be a formidable task for either Booker or Robinson, who would need to elevate their play significantly to start opposite Sweat. The Bears may also explore alternative strategies, including utilizing tackle Gervon Dexter at defensive end. Furthermore, this situation may push the team to seek potential trades for a starter to bolster their pass rush.

Despite the challenges faced, the Bears have an opportunity to address their defensive lineup through strategic moves, which could ultimately lead to strengthening their overall performance as the season progresses.
