Bears Battle to the End: What’s Next After Bowl Loss?

The California football team concluded their season with a tough 24-13 loss to No. 24 UNLV in the Art of Sport LA Bowl at SoFi Stadium. Running back showcased his skills with a season-high 84 rushing yards and a notable 29-yard touchdown run. The Golden Bears, now finishing the season at 6-7, participated in a bowl game for the second consecutive year.

Head Coach Justin Wilcox expressed appreciation for his team’s effort despite the challenging season. “I have a lot of love for so many guys on the team,” he stated, acknowledging both the hard work put in during practices and the frustration that came with some of the season’s outcomes. He emphasized a grateful outlook for the contributions made by the players throughout the year.

Quarterback, making his first start for the Bears, completed 13 of 20 passes for 109 yards before being substituted for a true freshman in the third quarter. Tight end also had a strong performance, making seven receptions for 61 yards. The game saw several young athletes taking the field, providing them with valuable experience as they aim to secure spots for the upcoming spring.

The first half was a competitive back-and-forth, beginning with Morris kicking a 43-yard field goal for Cal. After UNLV gained a slight lead, Martin’s 19-second touchdown run allowed California to briefly grasp a 10-7 advantage. However, the Rebels took control early in the second quarter, ending the half with a close score of 14-13. Unfortunately for the Bears, they were unable to find the end zone in the second half.

Looking forward, Coach Wilcox mentioned that the game provided a significant evaluation opportunity for many players who are now better positioned for the next season. While the loss was disappointing, the growth shown by younger players offers a hopeful glimpse into the future of the program.

This season, though challenging, has provided valuable lessons and growth opportunities for the Bears, which could serve them well as they prepare for the upcoming year.
