In a decisive matchup on Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium, Baylor University put a damper on the Kansas Jayhawks’ bowl aspirations by securing a dominant 45-17 victory. Though wins by Colorado and Arizona State meant that Baylor was eliminated from the Big 12 Championship Game, the Bears showcased their prowess by scoring on each of their first four drives in the second half.
Quarterback Blake Shapen had an outstanding game, throwing for 310 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 192 rushing yards and two touchdowns. This performance not only helped Baylor conclude the regular season with an impressive six-game winning streak—a record for the program—but also elevated Shapen to over 1,000 rushing yards for the season, setting a freshman record for the Bears.
Baylor was already holding a 21-10 lead at halftime and quickly strengthened their position by scoring touchdowns on their first three drives of the second half, extending their advantage to 42-17 against a Kansas team that had famously defeated three ranked opponents in prior weeks.
The Bears exhibited their offensive depth, amassing a season-high 603 total yards. Two players rushed for over 100 yards: Richard Reese (11 carries for 104 yards) and Shapen. The receiving corps also had a standout day, with receivers
Monaray Baldwin (7 receptions for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns) and Draylen Arnold (8 receptions for 102 yards and 1 touchdown) making significant contributions.
For Kansas, running back Devin Neal opened the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run, but it was short-lived as Baylor quickly retaliated. After the Bears managed to capitalize on a turnover, they displayed formidable offensive firepower, leaving the Jayhawks struggling to keep pace.
Despite a strong performance from Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels, who threw for 280 yards, two interceptions marred his efforts, leading the Jayhawks to finish the season with a 5-7 record.
Baylor now advances to bowl season, marking their 13th bowl appearance in the last 16 years and the third in five years under head coach Dave Aranda. The bowl selection announcement is set for December 8.
The victory not only highlighted Baylor’s resilience and capacity for growth but also set a hopeful tone for the program moving forward. With this strong finish, they will be looking to build on their momentum as they head into bowl season, making it an exciting time for players, coaches, and fans alike.
