Bayern Munich Sets Champions League Record with 9-2 Blowout!

Bayern Munich made history by becoming the first team in UEFA Champions League history to score nine goals in a single match, defeating Dinamo Zagreb 9-2. This milestone came as Harry Kane netted four goals, contributing significantly to the victory.

The impressive win not only set a new Champions League record but also marked the first time a team scored nine goals in a Champions League game, with the last occurrence in the European Cup era being Real Madrid’s 9-1 victory over FC Wacker Innsbruck in October 1990.

Kane’s four goals allowed him to surpass Wayne Rooney and become the highest-scoring English player in the competition’s history. Additionally, he became the first player to score three penalties in a single European Cup/Champions League match, excluding shootouts.

Other contributors to Bayern’s scoring were Raphaël Guerreiro, Michael Olise with two goals, and substitutes Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka. Thomas Müller also came off the bench, making his 152nd Champions League appearance, the most by any player for a single team in the competition.

This match marked the beginning of Bayern Munich’s 21st consecutive UEFA Champions League campaign with a victory, with their last opening match defeat dating back to the 2002-03 season against Deportivo de La Coruña. Meanwhile, Dinamo Zagreb has struggled in away matches, having lost 18 of their last 19 Champions League games, with a poor record against Bayern, conceding a total of 14 goals over the last two matchups.

Michael Olise became just the third French player to score more than one goal on his Champions League debut, joining the ranks of Thomas Deniaud and Thierry Henry. Despite the heavy loss, Dinamo Zagreb’s Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara scored in quick succession shortly after halftime, showcasing a brief moment of resilience.

Bayern’s next challenge in the group stage will be closely watched as they continue their impressive form in the tournament.
