The inaugural Battle of the Netters 2025 (BON2025) proved to be a remarkable success, overcoming challenges related to time and resource constraints. Held at the National Netball Centre in Laucala over the weekend, this event marked the revival of the inter-district championship, which had been absent from the national netball calendar for nearly a decade.
This tournament brought together 11 associations, with teams traveling from regions such as Taveuni, Savusavu, Labasa, Tavua, Nanukuloa, and Vatukaloko to compete against traditional rivals from Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka. The Secretary for BON2025, Lepani Justice Volahiga, expressed immense gratitude for the sponsors whose generous support facilitated the event, highlighting the critical role such championships play in showcasing and developing player skills nationwide.
An impressive attendance was noted, with approximately 645 athletes participating across five grades and two divisions, accompanied by officials, coaches, managers, parents, guardians, and supporters, making a total of around 1000 attendees. Volahiga emphasized the event’s importance as a platform for players to exhibit their potential and test their skills, noting the opportunities it presented for netball development, especially for districts outside the larger associations.
The competition results reflected notable performances, with the Suva teams dominating various categories. The Under-15 title was claimed by Suva Orchids, with Suva Makosoi as runners-up. In the Under-18 category, Suva Hibiscus secured victory, while Fiji Secondary School placed second. Suva Spartans emerged victorious in the Under-23 division, with Nadi as runners-up. The Open Men’s grade was won by Suva Warriors, with Tailevu taking second place, and Suva Lightning clinched the Open Women’s grade, with Lautoka as runners-up.
The BON2025 highlighted the enduring passion for netball within Fiji, signaling a promising future for the sport in the region. The success of this event bodes well for the upcoming BON2026, as organizers and participants continue to build upon this momentum to enhance netball development across all districts, fostering unity and increased competitiveness among teams. The return of the inter-district championship is a testament to Fiji’s resilient sporting spirit and dedication to nurturing its netball talent.
