In the upcoming Democratic primary in Virginia, former state delegate Jay Jones and Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor are vying to challenge incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares. Their campaign strategies largely center around critiquing the policies of former President Donald Trump and Miyares’ alignment with those policies.

As the primary election approaches on June 17, both candidates are vocal about their desire to protect the interests of federal workers and challenge Trump’s executive actions. Jones stated, “What we’ve gotten is fealty to Donald Trump, I will never bend at the president’s knee… he’s left these people high and dry.” He pledged to work with other Democratic attorneys general to legally confront the Trump administration in defense of federal employees.

Jones’s campaign is supported by the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union for federal workers, highlighting his commitment to federal employment issues. Meanwhile, Taylor emphasized the need for an attorney general prepared to confront Trump’s policies, stating, “We know that our current attorney general is not interested in protecting Virginians.” She pointed out the adverse impacts of these executive orders on federal employees, veterans, and seniors.

Taylor, with nearly three decades of prosecutorial experience, is confident in her track record, mentioning her victories against Republican opponents and her leadership during pivotal cases, including those involving civil rights issues. She stressed the importance of fair treatment for all Virginians.

In contrast, Jones cited his experience as an assistant attorney general for Washington, D.C., focusing on consumer protection. He has previously tackled issues like bank and tech company malpractices. Both candidates are appealing for a strengthened civil rights division within the Attorney General’s office, asserting the critical need to address discrimination and advocate for equity and inclusion in Virginia.

As they pursue endorsements to bolster their campaigns, Jones has garnered support from notable figures including former Virginia Governors Ralph Northam and Terry McAuliffe. Taylor has received endorsements from former Attorneys General and other prominent political figures, reinforcing her reputation in the Commonwealth.

This primary not only underscores the candidates’ stances against Trump-era policies but also emphasizes the broader fight for civil rights and worker protections in Virginia. The outcome will likely shape the state’s political landscape in the run-up to the general election against Miyares.
