Battle for Clark County School Board: Veteran vs. Educator in Controversial Race

A veteran affiliated with a controversial “parents rights” group is facing off against a seasoned educator focused on improving communication in the race for one of three open seats on the Clark County School Board.

Lydia Dominguez and Eileen Eady were the top two vote-getters in a six-candidate primary held in June for District B, which encompasses most of the northwest Las Vegas Valley. Dominguez received 30.4% of the votes, while Eady garnered 24.2%.

Currently, District B is represented by Trustee Katie Williams, who is not seeking reelection and may soon be ousted for no longer residing in the state.

Williams is among three trustees choosing not to run again this year, while a fourth, Board President Evelyn Garcia Morales, is up for reelection, indicating possible changes in board dynamics that have faced considerable scrutiny in recent years.

Eileen Eady is a former special education teacher with 15 years of experience across multiple states. After leaving the classroom in 2013, she established a daycare and a consulting business, and has recently engaged in state political activities, including supporting Democratic campaigns.

Eady believes her diverse experience equips her to understand the needs within the Clark County School District, the fifth largest in the nation, and identifies communication as a major issue. She expressed concerns that teachers feel unrepresented and unheard, which she attributes to rising ‘parents rights’ sentiments.

In contrast, her opponent, Lydia Dominguez, has not participated in interviews but responded to written questions. Dominguez, a U.S. Air Force veteran and author, is known for her association with the Clark County chapter of Moms for Liberty, which has been featured on Fox News for its controversial positions.

Moms for Liberty has faced criticism for its stance against vaccine mandates and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. On August 29, Dominguez announced her withdrawal from the local Moms for Liberty chapter, saying it was part of her commitment to leadership standards but did not clarify how it aligned with her values.

Her opponent, Eady, has criticized Moms for Liberty, highlighting the negative impact of its rhetoric on vulnerable populations, including transgender youth, and stressing the need for a focus on broader educational issues.

Eady plans to foster community involvement in School Organizational Teams, which are meant to provide insights at the school level, as she believes many parents are unaware of these initiatives.

If elected, Dominguez aims to prioritize academic success, school safety, and parental rights, leveraging her background as a veteran and business graduate.

Eady has received endorsements from several unions and progressive organizations, having raised $10,286 by July 15, compared to Dominguez’s $6,610.
