Parents are being urged to equip their children with mobile phones primarily for communication purposes, particularly during what Police Minister Ioane Naivalurua described as a “high-risk period.” The minister emphasized that maintaining contact with children is crucial, especially when they are away for extended periods during school events or social activities.
Mr. Naivalurua underscored the importance of communication, advocating for the use of mobile phones to ensure safety and foster regular interaction between parents and their children. He remarked, “These are gadgets we call mobile telephones,” noting that concerns about giving phones to kids should be weighed against the essential need for connectivity.
He also highlighted that parents need not invest in costly devices; a simple phone that enables basic communication is sufficient for keeping track of children’s whereabouts. “A cheap one that enables you to keep your communication alive” is enough to help parents stay informed, he noted.
The minister raised concerns about the dangers of parents being unaware of their children’s locations or companions, particularly during public events and after school hours. To promote accountability and safety, he advised parents to set clear ground rules, such as regular check-ins with their children.
Mr. Naivalurua encouraged parents with spare phones at home or the financial capacity to purchase a device to consider doing so, reiterating that effective communication is key to ensuring children’s safety, especially during the active school sports season. This proactive strategy not only enhances safety but also serves to strengthen the parent-child bond, fostering a more connected and secure family dynamic.
