The village of Barotu in Ra has recently celebrated a remarkable achievement with a payout of $140,000 from the newly established Barotu Nursery and Investment Company. This initiative, which aims to foster community development, represents a significant milestone for the village, located about 32 kilometers from Rakiraki town along Kings Highway.
Historically known for its rich variety of crustaceans, particularly giant mud crabs, Barotu is now experiencing an economic transformation as the mangrove nursery emerges as a vital new source of income. The community, with support from Conservation International and the successful restoration of their mangrove forests under the Blue Carbon Fiji project, established the nursery to fulfill the demand for seedlings from rural communities throughout the Western Division.
In its inaugural year, the nursery thrived, completing a substantial order of 82,700 seedlings for communities from Ra to Nadarivatu, Yasawa, and Nadroga. This effort is part of the Ministry of Finance’s Jobs for Nature Project, significantly enhancing Barotu’s economic resilience.
The nursery initiative is crucial for protecting Barotu’s coastline while also aiding neighboring communities in safeguarding their shores. Village headman Mecuisela Tuilewa praised the successful collaboration with Conservation International and nearby villages, highlighting how the nursery has fostered a sense of community unity and pride among residents.
Moreover, the Barotu Nursery and Investment Company provides a safety net for villagers by addressing various community needs, including repairs to the village hall and support during funerals. The project promotes local involvement, with men and youths actively participating and gaining knowledge about environmental stewardship and sustainability.
This initiative aligns with a broader government goal to plant 30 million trees over 15 years, emphasizing the potential for substantial environmental benefits while simultaneously enhancing economic prospects for the community. The success of the nursery symbolizes not only hope for Barotu but also serves as an inspiring example of how grassroots initiatives can drive meaningful positive change in communities.
