Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney dedicated a significant part of their careers to the New York Giants, with a combined ten seasons that saw Barkley emerge as a key offensive player and McKinney as a defensive leader.
However, their tenure with the Giants has come to an end. Barkley made the move to the Philadelphia Eagles during the offseason, joining one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. Meanwhile, McKinney signed with the Green Bay Packers, becoming an important addition to a restructured secondary.
The Eagles were interested in both players, but McKinney’s contract demands exceeded their budget. Though they could have reunited, they will instead compete against each other in Friday’s season opener.
“I’m looking forward to playing against Xavier,” Barkley commented. “He’s not just a great player but also a great leader. His drive for excellence when we were in New York was inspiring, and I know he’s carrying that over to his new team.”
Barkley reminisced about a memorable moment from their time as teammates, recalling how he gave McKinney a “welcome to the NFL” moment during practice. Barkley described a play where he ran up the middle and successfully overcame McKinney, which he believes is something McKinney might remember as he prepares to face him in the game.
McKinney echoed Barkley’s sentiments, recognizing the formidable challenge Barkley presents. “He’s dynamic with the ball,” McKinney stated. “He does everything you want from a running back. Whenever he has the ball, whether running or catching passes, he showcases his all-around talent. He’s a unique player.”
The two players have maintained their friendship through texting during the offseason and are eager to prove themselves with their respective new teams. Barkley expressed his excitement to demonstrate the capabilities of their teams. “We’re expecting their best, so it’s crucial that we prepare and execute our game plan,” he said.
