Barcelona maintained its flawless start to the Spanish league season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Getafe on Wednesday, thanks to another goal from Robert Lewandowski. This marked his seventh goal in as many games, helping the team secure their seventh consecutive win in the league.
The win ties Barcelona with their second-best start in league history, matching the seven victories achieved in the 2017-18 season. The club notably won eight games in a row at the start of the 2013-14 season.
Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, expressed pride in his team’s resilience, stating, “They fight 90 minutes or 95 minutes,” and also praised the support from fans, who he felt played a crucial role in the team’s performance.
In the opening half, Lewandowski scored in the 19th minute, capitalizing on a situation where Getafe’s goalkeeper David Soria failed to secure a cross. This goal not only reinforced his status as the leading scorer in the league but also marked Barcelona’s 6,500th goal in their league history.
Iñaki Peña stepped in as goalkeeper for Marc-André ter Stegen, who is out due to a serious knee injury. The team paid tribute to Ter Stegen by wearing T-shirts displaying supportive messages as they took the field.
Despite a late scare when Borja Mayoral nearly equalized for Getafe in stoppage time, the match concluded with Barcelona securing all three points. Getafe remains without a win and sits in the second-to-last position in the league standings.
In another match on Wednesday, Girona and Rayo Vallecano played to a goalless draw. Barcelona’s next match is against Osasuna on Saturday, followed by a visit to Alaves the following weekend.
