Barcelona had their sights set on Nico Williams during the summer transfer window, but the young talent ultimately decided to remain at Athletic Club for another season. Despite several reports placing the Catalan club as frontrunners to sign the promising winger, Williams chose to pursue his ambitions at his childhood club.
Former Barcelona sporting director Jordi Cruyff recently disclosed that the club’s interest in Williams dates back to 2023. He noted that Barcelona had been monitoring the player, as his contract was nearing its end, and they were hopeful about signing him once it lapsed.
In a press briefing following Barcelona’s 1-2 defeat against Monaco, Cruyff shared insights into their plans for Williams. He expressed regret about the missed opportunity, stating, “He was being watched, he was an interesting player whose contract was coming to an end.” He acknowledged Williams’ special talent, highlighting his appeal to top European teams.
Despite the interest from Barcelona and other clubs, Athletic Club moved quickly to secure Williams’ future, renewing his contract on December 1, 2023, to last until 2027. This renewal included a €58 million release clause, which Barcelona was prepared to activate; however, Williams ultimately decided to stay at Athletic Club.
As for Cruyff, he stepped away from his position shortly before the start of the 2023-24 season, handing over his responsibilities to Deco. While Barcelona may have missed out on Williams this summer, reports suggest they plan to make another attempt next June, as the player harbors dreams of joining the club but wishes to part on amicable terms.
