Barcelona’s interest in La Liga star Nico Williams has been confirmed by former sporting director Jordi Cruyff, who stated that the club had been tracking the player since 2023. Despite Barcelona’s efforts to secure Williams during the summer transfer window, the young winger chose to remain with Athletic Club for another season to fulfill his ambitions at his childhood club.
Cruyff disclosed that Barcelona had high hopes of signing Williams when his contract was set to expire. After a recent defeat to Monaco, he explained, “He was being watched, he was an interesting player whose contract was coming to an end.” He praised Williams as a unique talent, noting his potential and the interest he garnered from various top European clubs.
Athletic Club managed to negotiate a contract extension for Williams, prolonging his deal until 2027, and included a release clause of €58 million that Barcelona was prepared to activate. Ultimately, Williams decided to stay put and did not give Barcelona the opportunity to pursue the clause.
With Cruyff stepping down from his role just prior to the start of the 2023-24 season, Deco has since taken over his responsibilities. Despite missing out on Williams this summer, Barcelona is expected to make another attempt to sign him in June, as the player aspires to join the club under amicable circumstances.
