Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Getafe in LaLiga on Wednesday, thanks to a first-half goal from top scorer Robert Lewandowski. This win keeps Barcelona’s impressive run intact, as they maintain a perfect record after seven matches.
Playing without several key players, including Pedri and injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Dani Olmo, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo, Fermin Lopez, and Andreas Christensen, Barcelona took the lead in the 19th minute. Lewandowski capitalized on a mistake by Getafe goalkeeper David Soria, scoring from close range.
Hansi Flick praised Lewandowski’s performance, calling him the best No.9 of the past decade. He emphasized the forward’s ability to find the net and highlighted the importance of teamwork in achieving the goal. Barcelona controlled the game, holding nearly 80% possession and attempting 16 shots, but failed to extend their lead despite having several chances.
This victory marks Barcelona’s second-best start in league history, matching their seven wins from the 2017-18 season. They have outscored opponents 23-5 in their first seven games and currently lead the table by four points over defending champions Real Madrid, who won against Alaves on Tuesday.
Lewandowski’s goal, his seventh of the season, was set up after he found a loose ball in the area due to Soria’s inability to handle a high cross. After scoring, Lewandowski was substituted for Pedri in the 77th minute.
Iñaki Peña filled in as goalkeeper for the injured ter Stegen, and the team showed their support with T-shirts for their captain. Getafe, who nearly equalized in added time, remains winless and sits in second-to-last place.
Flick acknowledged the challenges posed by Getafe’s defense and expressed pride in his team’s mentality, emphasizing the need for sustained effort throughout the match.
