Xavier Vilajoana, a candidate in the upcoming Barcelona presidential election, is actively exploring the potential signing of Harry Kane from Bayern Munich. In an interview with ESPN, Vilajoana emphasized the importance of acquiring a top striker and indicated that Kane could be a key target if he wins the election on March 15.
“We’re missing a striker,” Vilajoana stated, highlighting the need for a center forward who excels at linking play and finishing chances. He also mentioned the necessity of strengthening the defense with a center back who could complement the current squad’s youth and experience.
Among potential strikers, Vilajoana expressed enthusiasm for Kane, describing the England international as a perfect fit for Barcelona’s style. “He is capable of dropping back to link up with his teammates and also plays as a pure No.9,” Vilajoana noted. Kane’s ability to operate effectively against tightly packed defenses would be a valuable asset for the Catalan club.
Currently, Kane’s contract with Bayern Munich runs until 2027, but reports suggest he has a release clause that became active in January, reportedly around €60 million. Bayern officials have indicated that they are in “intensive talks” regarding Kane’s future, but specific negotiations for a contract extension have not yet begun.
Vilajoana believes that Kane would be receptive to the idea of joining Barcelona, acknowledging the club’s enduring appeal to players. “There are very few players who don’t like Barcelona,” he remarked.
In addition to Kane, there is uncertainty regarding Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United. While the club holds an option to purchase Rashford for €30 million this summer, Vilajoana emphasized the importance of assessing internal options before making such decisions. He referenced potential talent already in the system, like Jan Virgili, as an alternative in the winger position.
Vilajoana concluded by reassuring fans that if signing Rashford is deemed beneficial for the team from a sporting perspective, the necessary funds would be available to secure the player. This commitment illustrates his focus on making strategic decisions that would bolster Barcelona’s competitiveness while keeping an eye on the club’s financial landscape.
