As in previous years, three talented players from Barça Academy Pro Arizona have been invited to train with the youth teams of FC Barcelona, allowing coaches to assess their development in both performance and attitude. This year, the selected youngsters are Graham Ford, Makai Wells, and Jorge Padilla. All three players were active participants in last year’s MLS playoffs, a competition that continues to gain strength annually.
Graham Ford is currently training with the U16A team, having made a notable impression during his previous training camp last year. This talented left-footed central midfielder is recognized for his effective ball possession, defensive skills, and overall game awareness.
Makai Wells has also joined the U16A squad and is visiting Barcelona for the first time. Known for his passing ability and strength in one-on-one situations, the right winger only joined Barça Academy Pro Arizona last year, but has quickly made his mark.
Meanwhile, Jorge Padilla has stepped up to train with the U19B team. This marks his inaugural experience at the Ciutat Esportiva after engaging with the Arizona center for four years. Padilla excelled in the MLS U16 playoffs, which significantly contributed to his selection for this European opportunity. As a right-sided midfielder, he is noted for his tackling skills and direct playing style that often sees him involved in attacking moves. His dedication and hard work have also played a crucial role in earning him this chance to develop in Barcelona.
The Barça Residency Academy USA, located in Casa Grande, Arizona, is the sole Barça program operating in North America, having commenced in 2017. With FC Barcelona coaches on-site, the academy ensures that the club’s training methodology is accurately imparted. It boasts eight soccer fields, a study center affiliated with Arizona State University, and is the first Barça Academy to have a team competing in MLS Next, the premier youth league in the United States.
This initiative highlights the commitment of FC Barcelona to nurturing young talent from around the globe, and the players selected are not only making strides in their own careers but are also representing the growing influence of soccer in North America. The ongoing dedication to these young athletes showcases a promising future for them, as they receive invaluable training and exposure to European soccer culture.
