As in previous years, three promising athletes from the Barça Academy Residency in Arizona are currently training with FC Barcelona’s youth teams to assess their development in performance and attitude. The talented trio selected by US-based coaches this year includes Graham Ford, Makai Wells, and Jorge Padilla. All three players were part of last year’s MLS playoffs, a competition that continues to gain strength and recognition each season.
Graham Ford, who is training with the U16A team, previously impressed during last year’s training camp in Barcelona. As a left-footed central midfielder, he excels in maintaining possession, ball recovery, and understanding the dynamics of the game.
Makai Wells has joined the same U16A squad for what marks his inaugural trip to Barcelona. As a right winger, he is known for his exceptional passing ability and strength in one-on-one duels. Notably, he joined Barça Academy Pro Arizona only last year, showcasing his rapid development.
Jorge Padilla is currently practicing with the U19B team, also making his first appearance at the Ciutat Esportiva after four years at the Arizona center. His standout performances in the MLS U16 playoffs were pivotal in his selection for this opportunity to train in Europe. A right-sided midfielder, Padilla is recognized for his tackling prowess and direct playing style, which keeps him actively involved in attacking plays. His commitment and hardworking nature further contributed to his selection for this prestigious trip.
Barça Residency Academy USA stands out as FC Barcelona’s sole program in North America, having launched in 2017. With qualified FC Barcelona coaches on-site, this academy ensures the authentic transfer of the club’s training methodology. Located in Casa Grande, Arizona, the academy features eight soccer fields and a study center affiliated with Arizona State University, and it proudly fields a team in MLS Next, the top youth league in the United States.
This initiative not only highlights the potential of young athletes in the U.S. but also demonstrates FC Barcelona’s commitment to nurturing talent beyond its traditional borders. With players like Ford, Wells, and Padilla receiving opportunities to grow and learn in one of the world’s most prestigious football environments, it reflects a hopeful future for soccer in America.
