As part of their ongoing commitment to developing young talent, Barça Academy Pro Arizona has sent three standout players to train with the youth teams at FC Barcelona. This initiative allows the coaching staff to gauge the players’ development in both performance and attitude. This year’s selected athletes are Graham Ford, Makai Wells, and Jorge Padilla, all of whom have recently participated in the increasingly competitive MLS playoffs.
Graham Ford, who has previously trained in Barcelona, is currently preparing with the U16A team. A left-footed central midfielder, Ford is noted for his exceptional team play, ball recovery skills, and game intelligence. His past experience has positioned him as a valuable asset in training.
Makai Wells is also joining the U16A squad for the first time in Barcelona. The right winger, who joined Barça Academy Pro Arizona last year, brings strong passing skills and excels in one-on-one encounters, showcasing promising potential in his initial visit.
Jorge Padilla is participating with the U19B team during this trip, marking his first time at the Ciutat Esportiva after four years at the Arizona center. Padilla’s remarkable performance in the MLS U16 playoffs played a significant role in earning him this opportunity overseas. As a right-sided midfielder, he encompasses a direct playing style and demonstrates strength in tackles, coupled with a dedicated work ethic that has earned him recognition.
Barça Residency Academy USA is the only program of its kind in North America, having opened in 2017. It features FC Barcelona coaches who are dedicated to imparting the club’s training methodologies. Situated in Casa Grande, Arizona, the academy boasts eight soccer fields and a partnership with Arizona State University, and it is the only Barça Academy to participate in MLS Next, the premier youth league in the United States.
This initiative highlights the continuous growth of soccer development programs that nurture young talent, opening doors for promising athletes to refine their skills on an international stage. The experience gained at such prominent institutions can pave the way for their future success in the sport.
