A limited edition Barbie doll representing the late R&B star Aaliyah has quickly sold out, highlighting the enduring legacy of the iconic singer on what would have been her 46th birthday. Aaliyah, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 22 due to a plane crash in 2001, continues to captivate fans even two decades after her passing, as evidenced by the swift sellout of the collectible doll.
Retailing for $55, the Barbie was released through Mattel Creations as part of the Barbie Music Series, which honors influential artists such as Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, and Tina Turner. Designed to appeal to adult collectors, the doll’s attire is a nod to Aaliyah’s style in the music video for her hit song “One in a Million,” featuring black faux-leather pants, a crop top, a zipped vest, and stylish sunglasses. The doll was sold exclusively to members of a subscription-based collectors group on the launch night and was also listed on Target’s website, which has since indicated that preorders are sold out, with more expected to be released on January 26.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah, affectionately known as “Baby Girl,” first rose to prominence with her 1994 debut single “Back and Forth.” Over her career, she released four platinum albums, three of which were released posthumously. The creation of this Barbie doll is a collaborative effort between the Barbie design team and Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton.
In a statement from Mattel, Haughton reflected on his sister’s childhood love for Barbie dolls and the dreams she had for a career in entertainment from a young age. He expressed gratitude for the way this tribute enables fans to connect with Aaliyah’s inspiring legacy. Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie, emphasized Aaliyah’s impactful contribution to the R&B genre and her lasting influence on ’90s music.
This celebration not only commemorates Aaliyah’s contributions to the music world but inspires fans to pursue their dreams with confidence, showcasing Barbie as a symbol of empowerment and self-belief.
The release of this doll serves as a meaningful tribute to Aaliyah’s legacy while promoting the idea that anyone can achieve their aspirations, resonating with fans young and old alike.
