The Baravi Legion rugby team is poised to make its debut at the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s tournament today, marking a significant milestone for the young squad composed entirely of emerging players from coastal communities in Nadroga. Representing villages such as Tagaqe, Namada, Vatukarasa, and Malevu, the team approaches this challenge with a strong sense of confidence and unity, eager to showcase their potential despite lacking established rugby stars.

For many Baravi Legion members, this tournament represents their first real exposure to high-level rugby competition, offering them a valuable opportunity to test their skills against more experienced teams. Team manager Iliesa Domonakibau expressed complete faith in his players, asserting that while they may not be highly recognized names, their determination and heart will shine through on the field. “We believe in our boys; they may not be big names, but they have heart, discipline, and the hunger to prove themselves. This tournament is a chance for them to show their talents,” he stated.

The team has prioritized fitness, teamwork, and a streamlined style of play in their preparations. Domonakibau emphasized that their journey in the tournament goes beyond mere scoreboard results. “This team was formed to give young men direction. Rugby keeps the boys focused, disciplined, and away from drugs. By competing at this year’s Savusavu 7s, we are showing that there are better paths for our youth,” he remarked.

Captain Saimoni Kunagone is aware of the challenges that lie ahead, particularly when faced with formidable opponents like Army Green, LCW Lavena Reds, and Solove Rugby. Despite the daunting task before them, Domonakibau remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. “We know the pool is very tough, but our boys are not afraid. This is where they will learn, grow, and show what they are capable of. We believe in their talent and their discipline,” he assured.

The three-day tournament kicks off today at Ratu Ganilau Park, providing an exciting opportunity for these young athletes to prove themselves on the competitive rugby stage. The Baravi Legion not only seeks to compete but also aims to inspire their community’s youth to pursue positive life choices through the sport of rugby. With a focus on growth and development, the team’s journey reflects the hopeful potential of harnessing sports to uplift individuals and communities alike.
