The Baravi Legion rugby team is set to embark on its inaugural journey at the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s tournament today. This young squad, made up entirely of budding players from the coastal regions of Nadroga, including the villages of Tagaqe, Namada, Vatukarasa, and Malevu, is tackling the challenge ahead with unwavering confidence and a strong sense of unity. Stepping onto the field without any established rugby stars, the team believes that their raw talent can outshine the lack of reputation.
For many members of the Baravi Legion, this tournament represents their first encounter with high-level rugby competition, providing a significant opportunity to measure their skills against more seasoned and well-known teams. Team manager Iliesa Domonakibau expressed full confidence in his players despite their newcomer status. “We believe in our boys; they may not be big names, but they have heart, discipline, and the hunger to prove themselves. This tournament is a chance for them to show their talents on the field,” he stated.
Preparation has focused on fitness, teamwork, and maintaining a simplified yet effective style of play. Domonakibau emphasized that the team’s participation in the tournament transcends mere results on the scoreboard. “This team was formed to give young men direction. Rugby keeps the boys focused, disciplined, and away from drugs. By competing at this year’s Savusavu 7s, we are showing that there are better paths for our youth,” he remarked.
Team captain Saimoni Kunagone acknowledged the challenges ahead, as they face seasoned opponents such as Army Green, LCW Lavena Reds, and Solove Rugby. Although the task is daunting for a team debuting at such a level, Domonakibau remains optimistic. “We know the pool is very tough, but our boys are not afraid. This is where they will learn, grow, and show what they are capable of. We believe in their talent and their discipline,” he asserted.
The three-day tournament kicks off today at Ratu Ganilau Park and offers an exciting platform for these young athletes to prove themselves in the competitive world of rugby. Through their participation, the Baravi Legion not only aims to compete but also strives to inspire other youth in their community to seek positive pathways through the sport.
