Bank of America Faces Customer Backlash Amid Major Online Access Issues

On Wednesday, thousands of Bank of America customers faced difficulties accessing their online accounts, as reported by monitoring service Downdetector and various social media platforms.

Many users were unable to sign in, while others who gained access found their account balances displayed as $0. Reports of the outage surged around 12:45 p.m. Eastern time, peaking at 1:25 p.m. with over 19,200 complaints. Complaints remained steady for about an hour before gradually decreasing after 8 p.m.

Bank of America acknowledged the issue in a statement, saying, “Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today. These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

The bank did not elaborate on the cause of the outage. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, which recently experienced significant damage from Hurricane Helene, it remains unclear whether the outages were linked to the storm’s aftermath.

Affected customers took to social media to express their frustrations. One user reported that multiple accounts showed a zero balance, despite having over $20,000 in total. Another stated that the app was malfunctioning and online banking displayed outdated balance information.

Several users reported partial access to their accounts, while others noted that the account transfer function was not working. Some did find that their debt balances were correctly displayed.

Bank of America’s social media account directed customers to an automated help link. One user mentioned that although their account balance showed $0 online, a call to the bank’s automated helpline confirmed the accurate balances.

Some customers received prompts indicating that the current balance for one or more accounts “may be temporarily unavailable.” One frustrated customer suggested that compensation was warranted for the stress caused by the situation.
