The National Citizen Party (NCP), originating from the youth-led protests in Bangladesh, faces uncertainty as it heads into the elections, according to voters and political analysts. Although there was considerable optimism following the Gen Z movement that successfully challenged the long-standing authoritarian rule of Sheikh Hasina, expectations for the NCP’s electoral performance may not align with reality.

Initially, the Gen Z-driven protests were celebrated for their inclusive and secular agenda, symbolizing a potential departure from the historical dominance of established political factions like the Awami League and the BNP. However, concerns about the NCP’s leadership choices have emerged, particularly its alliance with the right-wing Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami. This partnership led to significant dissent within the party ranks, with many members, especially women, resigning in protest over the ideological conflict.

Furthermore, the NCP’s leadership has been criticized for drawing parallels between the recent protests and the devastating Bangladeshi War of Independence in 1971. This comparison has been deemed arrogant by some, as the war remains a deeply emotional topic due to its harrowing historical context, including widespread violence against civilians. Such remarks could alienate voters who carry the weight of that history.

Allegations of corruption among some party members have also marred the NCP’s credibility. As integrity in political leadership is a critical issue for the electorate, these accusations hinder the party’s ability to present itself as a moral alternative to the existing government.

In this context, observers point to a significant lesson for the NCP: while mobilizing people for protests can lead to the downfall of a regime, transitioning that momentum into meaningful political change is much more complex and challenging. As the elections approach, many are left to ponder the true significance of the 2024 uprising and the sacrifices made by the youth. Optimistically, there remains a potential for future political engagement among young voters who are keen on shaping the nation’s narrative moving forward.
