A recent graduate of Northwestern High School is set to take the field this weekend as part of the vibrant Savannah Bananas, a baseball team renowned for its innovative and entertaining approach to the sport. The Bananas will play in Cincinnati, attracting two sold-out crowds at the Great American Ball Park.
Voorhees is scheduled to pitch for the Bananas during Saturday’s game against the newly-formed Texas Tailgaters. “It’s amazing and humbling to play in such a prestigious venue,” he shared, reflecting on how the experience differs from traditional Major League Baseball. The Bananas, established in 2016, are famous for their theatrical flair, featuring elements like choreographed dances, unique run-scoring celebrations, and entertaining antics from players and coaches alike, including their ‘Man Nana’ cheer squad and the ‘Banana Nana’ grandma dance group.
Previously, the Bananas displayed their unique style of play in front of an audience of 150,000 at the Carolina Panthers’ Bank of America Stadium. Their Banana Ball format allows games to be played in under two hours, incorporating unconventional rules such as batters being able to steal first base and fans catching foul balls for outs.
Reflecting on his journey, Voorhees expressed that playing for the Bananas has been an exciting experience that surpasses traditional baseball. “It’s been really fun; I’ve had the time of my life,” he noted. After a brief hiatus from the sport, he is reviving his pitching career and overcoming challenges to execute trick pitches and plays while entertaining fans.
Having previously participated in the Coastal Plain League with the Bananas and serving as a baseball coach in Springfield, Voorhees has now stepped up to play in prestigious arenas. The Bananas have plans to perform in iconic venues like Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium during this season.
In addition to the thrilling games, the Bananas will host a pre-game party, initiating festivities earlier in the day, including music and a show geared towards fans eager to experience the excitement of Banana Ball.
Voorhees is excited to fulfill his childhood dream of pitching at a professional baseball stadium, describing his time with the Bananas as “a blessing.” He remarked, “It’s amazing to think that a guy from little old Springfield gets to travel the world and play in front of millions.”
The spirit and innovation of the Savannah Bananas promise a memorable experience for fans, exemplifying how the team blends sport, fun, and community engagement. The positive atmosphere and excitement surrounding their games continue to draw large crowds, showcasing a refreshing take on America’s pastime.
