A significant water main break and related plumbing issues have forced the closure of three Baltimore City schools for two consecutive days. Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School, Youth Opportunity, and the Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts were impacted on both Wednesday and Thursday. Additionally, the Harlem Park Recreation Center also closed on Thursday due to the ongoing water problems.

According to a spokesperson from Baltimore City Public Schools, the water supply was temporarily turned off for construction repairs prior to the break, which happened while the service was briefly restored. Efforts are underway to coordinate transportation for students already at the schools, with staff members remaining on site until they are picked up by buses or family.

A representative from the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) indicated that most repairs to the water main have been completed, but it remains uncertain whether classes can resume on Friday. Observers noted that crews were actively working to manage the issue, which has been affecting nearby residents as well.

Local resident Walter Waters expressed concern about the situation, emphasizing the importance of restoring water service to the schools. He noted that although he can manage his own water needs, the schools’ access to clean water is a priority.

The DPW detailed that two factors are causing low water pressure in the affected schools. First, there is a plumbing issue within the school buildings needing resolution before they can reopen. Second, an active water main break in the vicinity complicates the situation. Crews are currently working concurrently with the school’s plumbing repair team to address these issues, with expectations that pressure will normalize once repairs are complete.

Resident Somaree Taru reflected on the ongoing water issues in her neighborhood, recalling how previous leaks turned into ice patches on the streets. She also mentioned facing a significant charge on her water bill, which she is disputing. Taru expressed hope that the repairs being made will not only restore service to the schools but also resolve the lingering issues in her area.

Despite the challenges triggered by the water main break, residents are optimistic about the ongoing work of the DPW crews. There is a collective hope that these repairs will lead to long-term solutions for the water problems experienced in the community.
