Bali’s Battle Against Rabies: Can Vaccination Efforts Turn the Tide?

Public health officials in Bali’s Gianyar Regency are facing a significant challenge concerning rabies, as reported cases of animal bites attributed to rabid animals reached 3,066 from January to May 2025. This alarming number underscores the ongoing threat posed by rabies in the region.

During this period, 1,817 individuals received the Anti-Rabies Vaccine (VAR) to prevent potential fatalities from the disease. Despite ongoing vaccination efforts aimed at both domestic pets and the control of feral animal populations, the incidence of rabies-related incidents remains disturbingly high. For context, the prior year saw 7,654 reported cases of animal bites from rabid animals, with 2,861 persons undergoing vaccination.

Ni Nyoman Ariyuni, the Head of Gianyar Regency’s Health Service, has assured the public of adequate supplies of the rabies vaccine, stating that VAR is readily available at all Gianyar Health Centers (Puskesmas) and the Payangan General Hospital. Currently, there are 1,407 vials of VAR and 53 vials of Anti-Rabies Serum (SAR) in stock as of June 18, 2025.

Health officials continue to advocate for public vigilance, advising anyone bitten by potentially rabid animals, such as dogs, cats, or monkeys, to seek immediate medical attention. This proactive stance highlights the importance of community awareness in combating the spread of rabies.

The ongoing efforts illustrate a commitment to mitigating this public health threat and protecting the well-being of the community in Gianyar. Continued cooperation and vigilance are crucial as officials work to address the rabies crisis effectively.
