The 2025 NFL regular season has concluded with playoff spots determined, leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ season in the rearview mirror. Despite a promising start, the Buccaneers’ journey ended with an 8-9 record and an unclear future ahead.

Initially, quarterback Baker Mayfield appeared to be a frontrunner for the MVP, showcasing his talent during the early part of the season. Through the first nine games, Mayfield completed 200 of 312 passes for 2,192 yards, accumulating 16 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. This strong performance, however, did not carry through the second half of the season. In the subsequent eight games, his stats reflected a stark decline, going 143 of 231 for 1,501 yards with just 10 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, resulting in a significant drop in quarterback rating.

Historically, the Buccaneers have asserted themselves within the NFC South, claiming the division title for four consecutive years from 2021 to 2024. Yet, their recent attempts to maintain dominance have been lackluster, with only slightly improved records of 8-9 in 2022, 9-8 in 2023, and 10-7 in 2024. A promising 6-2 start to the current season was overshadowed by a disheartening stretch that saw the team lose seven out of eight games, culminating in a tense Week 18 battle against the Carolina Panthers.

The Bucs entered the final weekend facing quirky playoff scenarios where their fate in the division could hinge on the outcomes of other games. A win against the Panthers not only secured their victory that day but also handed them an opportunity to head to the playoffs, reliant on a Saints vs. Falcons matchup. Ultimately, the Bucs managed to win, but the Saints’ loss to the Falcons left them on the outside looking in, raising questions about the future dynamics within the NFC South.

Looking forward, the offseason presents a critical juncture for the Buccaneers as star players Mike Evans and Lavonte David head into free agency and head coach Todd Bowles finds his job security under scrutiny. A rebuilding phase might be essential if the Buccaneers aim to reclaim their former glory. However, they could also choose a less introspective route, much like the New Orleans Saints did in prior years, attempting to retain their aging core rather than embracing the prospects of renewal.

As Tampa Bay reflects on a challenging season, the coming months could set a new course that may either rejuvenate the team’s aspirations or lead to further difficulties in their quest for a championship.
